Artist's saucy sketch of busty pier plans

BAY artist Peter Gander likes to keep abreast of the latest developments in the town. So when he spotted our front page exclusive featuring Pier Trust member David Parish's double-domed design for a new pavilion, he could not resist putting pen to paper.

He sent this saucy version to us after our Baywatcher gossip column dubbed the scheme Herne Boob and suggested it looked like a pair of breasts.

Peter, of Station Road, Herne Bay, said he was a fan of the design but admitted: "You might say a couple of things popped into my head when I first saw the plans in the Times and thought it would make a great saucy seaside postcard.

"It is just a bit of friendly fun as I'm a founder member of the Pier Trust and actively support it.

"I like the new domed design which nicely mirrors the nearby bandstand. I'd love to see artists like myself trading in there, along the lines of the harbour huts at Whitstable."

Abreast Of Plans is Peter's second comic Herne Bay piece. He donated a painting to the trust last year to commemorate Herne Bay Pier.

It will be raffled when the old pavilion finally comes down in April.

Good to hear my old mucker Paul McMullan - Fleet Street legend and tabloid hack extraordinaire - is now being gainfully employed at the Herne Bay Times in between running the exclusive Castle Inn in Russell Street Dover - best pub in Kent I'll have you know. This is just the sort of yarn that would have tickled his fancy back in the day. Wonder if he wrote it.We need more classy operators like Paul in the county to take our great local newspapers - such as the Folkestone Herald and the Dover Times - onto the next level."
