Whitstable and Herne Bay have experienced a slower rail service since the introduction of high speed trains in Kent, say local councillors.

A panel of five CCC members, who heard evidence from passengers and the train companies, has concluded that while the Canterbury service has improved and may lead to economic benefits for the city, people living in the coastal towns are paying more for slower journeys.

Said Cllr Jenny Samper, who chaired the review: "It is undoubtedly the case that in Herne Bay and Whitstable, passengers have to put up with a significantly worse service.

"There are some measures Southeastern could put in place quite quickly that would improve the situation and we hope they will take our suggestions on board."

The panel says the 'stopping pattern' on the North Kent line to Victoria urgently needs changing.

"Ultimately, we want to see 'classic' services get back to their former levels when the new Kent rail franchise starts in 2014," says Cllr Samper. "Many people use these trains for business and pleasure and they have a right to expect a reliable and efficient service in return for the fares they pay."

  • Southeastern fares rose by an average 6% this week.
