Blasts from the past - punk returns to Whitstable this Spring....
-
The Bad Shepherds, with Adrian Edmondson, play punk on folk instruments at the East Quay soon.
Local promoters WhitLive have secured appearances at the East Quay by two big name acts who continue to perform the 1970s anarchic-style music in the 21st century.
First up are The Blockheads on Saturday April 30th, a band founded by Ian Dury who was a teacher at Canterbury School of Art when he found musical fame with his first band, Kilburn and the High Roads.
Dury died in 2000, but the Blockheads carry on - and will be playing Dury hits such as 'Clever Trevor' and 'Reasons to be Cheerful Part 3' in Whitstable.
A month later on Friday May 20th, comedy actor Ade Edmondson (The Young Ones, Bottom, The Comic Strip Presents) will bring his trio Bad Shepherds to play punk songs on folk instruments - fiddle, pipes and mandolin. Bands the guys 'cover' include Sex Pistols, The Clash, The Stranglers and even Kraftwerk.
Each gig will also offer a supporting band from East Kent: Whitstable's own Natural Selection will play on the Blockheads' night and Tener Duende from Folkestone will support the Bad Shepherds.
Promoter Jane Lindsay told Whitstable People: "WhitLive's intention is to bring major national and international artists to Whitstable. There is a real thirst for 'proper gigs' in the town."
Tickets for each night cost £15 and are available from Hotel Contintental, Gatefield Sounds in both Whitstable and Herne Bay, and Canterbury Rock (Whitstable Road, Canterbury). You can also buy them online from www.wegottickets.com
