Our most recent time was our daughter's birthday treat so we went for the Taster menu. FANTASTIC!! and surprisingly filling. I can't remember ever eating anything there, or seeing anything on the menu, that I didn't like. Good, very reasonably priced wines. What I love is that Phil will talk to you about wines suitable for what you have chosen to eat - and he doesn't try to sell you the most expensive (In fact they don't seem to have rip-off expensive). Everything about the place exudes the enthusiasm behind it.

Our first date was at The Sportsman at Seasalter. My beloved fell in love with me and with Kent; I suspect I owe it all to Stephen Harris's magnificent cooking! On a sunny day this pub next to the sea wall, with its stripped floors and tables, simple decor, friendly staff and outstanding food, is just irresistible. If you’re heading for Whitstable, it’s definitely worth a visit.

The Sportsman at Seasalter is a great spot for lunch: you can work up an appetite walking there along the beach from town, and then enjoy a post-prandial stroll back!
Ostensibly a pub, it’s filled by diners rather than drinkers these days, thanks to the fine reputation of Stephen Harris’s cooking. The Sportsman is lovely and informal in atmosphere, though you need to book or you could well miss out. There are two menus: the tasting menu (you need to pre-order this at least 48 hours in advance, but well worth it by all accounts); and the general menu which is chalked up on a blackboard by the bar. This one changes daily, depending on local suppliers, and you tell the man at the bar what you want.
The service is generally good, the cooking sublime, amply meriting the great reviews The Sportsman has received from top food critics and the Michelin star it has been awarded.

Took my parents here whilst they were visiting from Portugal and had an amazing meal yet again. The Sportsman delivers time after time.

Contrary to recent newspaper articles, I have to say that this is one of the finest restaurants in Kent. I have eaten all over the world and in many Michelin starred retaurants and the quality of the food at The Sportsman is second to none. Fesh, local ingredients along with imaginative menus make this a place to visit whatever the occasion. Is it expensive - no. Is it worth every penny - yes. Can you get a cheaper meal in Whitstable - yes. Will it be as good as The Sportsman - doubtful. If there was one minus point it is that it could do with a lick of paint outside - but is that really important? Not really. I would rather have a great meal than a bad meal in flash surroundings. That said the interior is warm and welcoming and the staff are great.
